Projects under Smart Cities Mission of Central Government transformed Chennai significantly

Various projects worth 1000 crore rupees implemented under the ambitious Smart Cities Mission of the Central Government have transformed the city of Chennai significantly. The projects such as the development of smart roads in ABD area, the pedestrian plaza at Theyagaraya Road, Sensory Park at Santhome, Skywalk connecting Mambalam stations and Theyagaraya Nagar Bus Terminus, transforming old schools into smart schools, creation of Integrated Command and Control Center have made the life of the people of Chennai easier and convenient.
 
The success of these projects has encouraged Chennai Municipal Corporation to implement the concept of Smart Cities Mission in regular projects of the corporations too.
 
Chennai was selected as one of the first 20 smart cities by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government launched its flagship Smart Cities Mission on 25th June 2015. Under this ambitious scheme 100 cities were selected for redevelopment through a two-stage competition from January 2016 to June 2018.
 
Additional Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation J Radhakrishnan said to Akashvani News that Under the Smart Cities Mission, Chennai has been doing a number of activities.
 
Mr. Radhakrishnan, who is also the Chairman of Chennai Smart City Limited, has highlighted the development of the pedestrian plaza in Pondy market under the mission.
 
In May 2023, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry extended the deadline for the Smart Cities Mission till June 2024.
